Symposium on the 50th Anniversary of Operational Numerical Weather Prediction

The American Meteorological Society would greatly appreciate your help in promoting the special Symposium on the 50th Anniversary of Operational Numerical Weather Prediction via your web pages, list serves and newsletters.

Symposium on the 50th Anniversary of Operational Numerical Weather Prediction Less Than A Month Away

The Symposium on the 50th Anniversary of Operational Numerical Weather Prediction, a special three and half-day event dedicated to the pioneering developments in numerical weather prediction and the remarkable improvements in forecast skill and support of the nation's economy, well-being, and national defense achieved over the last 50 years, will be held June 14-17, 2004 in College Park, Maryland.

The Symposium takes place at the Inn and Conference Center in Adelphi, Maryland, near the University of Maryland's College Park campus (just north of Washington DC).

The planned symposium sessions include a Historical Overview; Round Table Discussion; Evolution of Supercomputers and Forecast Models; From Model Predictions to Forecasters: Then and Now; Evolution of Data Assimilation;Long-range Forecasting; and the Future of NWP. Sessions will include invited papers, poster and oral presentations, and panel discussions.

Broad participation from the public, private, and academic sectors will be prominent, to include well-known scientists and industry leaders in NWP. This symposium will also have an historical exhibit that will feature industry, civil, and military NWP displays, demonstrations, and current applications.

The symposium is being organized by the National Centers for Environmental Prediction, Air Force Weather Agency, Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center, National Weather Association and the American Meteorological Society.
