We Invite You to Become a Member of the National Council of Industrial Meteorologists (NCIM)
Why We Want You
We are constantly seeking new members. Our organization is strengthened by each addition of a meteorologist from a diverse corner of the private sector. We want your ideas and opinions, we want your perspective, and we want your help in achieving our goals.
About Us
Our organization includes professional meteorologists with very large ranges of age and experience - from a few years out of school, to 45 years of service. Our primary common goals include the following:
Encourage broad use of applied meteorology in society |
Improve professional standards for meteorological work |
Educate industry and the public in proper use of meteorological information |
Encourage the government to use sound meteorological science |
Support prosperous entry of new meteorologists into the private sector |
For a comprehensive list of NCIM's purposes, please see our vision statement on the NCIM web site at: http://www.ncim.org.
We were founded in 1968, and are the nation's oldest, continuously active professional association of private sector consulting and industrial meteorologists. We were initially formed to accommodate the diverse needs and interests within the weather consulting and information industry, and that philosophy continues.
NCIM has identified and responded to meteorological issues affecting the private practice of meteorology. Because our charter prohibits us from lobbying the Congress, the White House or other governmental entities, we have historically engaged in quiet advocacy on matters relating to the future of private sector meteorology. We also have longstanding cooperative relationships with the National Weather Service. Our overall philosophy and methods have proven effective in influencing policy and practice in government and industry.
NCIM has also built a reputation as an active supporter of students interested in a career path in the atmospheric sciences. We financially support the American Meteorological Society (AMS) industry scholarship program, and have organized educational short courses co-sponsored with the AMS.
Types of Members
NCIM has four membership types: Consultant, Associate, Affiliate (new 2009), and Retired. Consultant Members possess the CCM designation and devote at least 30% of their professional time to professional consulting. Associate Members do not yet have an AMS CCM certification, but are actively working towards that goal. Affiliate Members are observers, contributors and counselors in the ongoing affairs of the organization to the mutual benefit of both. They do not have voting power, but may serve on any duly constituted committee established by the organization. There is no expectation that the Affiliate Member become Consultant or Associate Members. There are no requirements regarding employment, other than their professional interests shall intersect with those of the climate and weather enterprise. Retired Members are former Consultant Members who engage in consulting no more than 25% of full-time.
